The above photos are the view I had from the 5th Floor of the Hengda Eye Hospital for 10 days. The top photo is across the street. It was a car service garage. Underneath the red sign was a dance studio. I could watch the cute little girls do their ballet every evening at about 5 pm. The second photo down is all apartment buildings. Can you imagine how many people there are to fill all of those up? The bottom picture is a park that I could see outside my window. In the mornings the older retired people met and did Tai Chi and in the evenings at 6:30pm they had music (the same music every night) playing. Carol said the old people came and danced to it. It was dark so I couldn't see what was happening, but I enjoyed the music every night that it didn't rain.
So they had Coke Zero in China! Joy! I was so grateful! While I was testing the first day there, Don and Carol went to the Supermarket next door and Don found it! He said they actually only had regular Coke, Coke Zero, and Sprite, but no Diet! I was so grateful because Zero is my favorite and it brought me joy when I could pop open a bottle every day.
I only got to leave the Hospital 3 times (each time to go to Western Union). I got a kick out of the floor mats in this car. It was crinkled up newspaper. Carol always ordered Chinese Uber (it seriously is) and they always had pretty nice cars, but put these protector mats on the seats so you had to go digging for a seatbelt. If you have ever been on a road in China, seatbelts are a must. I've never seen such crazy driving. They do drive defensively and never look at their phones. They couldn't! You have to be on guard! Carol said she had a friend who lived in the US for a while and he would read the newspaper while driving because it is so "boring" to drive here!
KTV is karaoke. It is huge! I think I saw 5 different places that said it. Carol said it is really popular with the older people!
This is after the second procedure. I was joking around that I thought it looked like I had had a lobotomy. I thought I might need one after my 10 days in that room!
This is the world famous Carol! I taught her the saying, "BFF." I told her she is my Chinese BFF. She told me I was her American BFF. I'm so grateful for her. She did become a friend to me. She took very good care of me and is a wonderful person. I learned so much about Chinese culture from her. She lived in Germany for 5 years so we also spoke a lot of German together. It was a fun, multinational experience!
This flattering shot is my adorable hairdo after I arrived home. The other side looked the same. Carol called me "Punk Mom." Luckily I had a hair appointment scheduled soon after I got home so I could blend it in a little better. My hair grows super fast, so that is good.
It was a very incredible experience. It was so hard being so lonely and far from home, but I'm grateful for the opportunity. So many people prayed for me and that was very humbling. I'm hoping for stable vision for many years and thankful for the abundant tender mercies that were poured out on us during this time.
I have started to pray for the hearts of the government people in China to be softened to allow missionary work in that country. The people are amazing. Family is huge to them and that is such a beautiful part of the Gospel is the divinity of Family. It would be such a blessing. Carol told me that many people are Buddhist, many are Atheist, and there are some Christians. If they could be taught about the Savior and feel the Spirit, it would be so amazing for that country.
